Why the name Barn Owl? Our malt house is built on a family property and those that grew up here years ago remember the rare sightings of a barn owl. The barn owl is currently on Ontario's list of endangered animals. The shift from mixed farming to large scale monoculture has reduced the barn owls habitat here. There is a similar story to small scale, regional malt houses; through industrialization and centralization, the small scale malt house has been extinct.
Do you offer tours? We have been overwhelmed by the interest in touring our malt house. Due to the nature of floor malting and our limited capacity of floor space, it is difficult for us to offer tours to the public. We are planning to schedule a few organized tours throughout the summer and will be sure to share information regarding these events through social media. Please note that our kiln and seed cleaning areas are proprietary and will not included in any tour.
Is the grain you use actually grown in Ontario? Yes, every last grain!
Do you grow the grains yourselves? No, we work with local farmers to source our grains.
Do you offer "contract malting" (malting your barley for you to sell under your brand)? No, we do not have the capacity to offer contract malting.
Do you malt for farm breweries (breweries growing malting quality grains for their estate brewery)? A quick answer is yes, if the barley is up to malting quality we are happy to be able to fill in the processing gap for farm breweries. But please shoot us a message, this is a complicated process.
Is floor malting just a budget way of malting? No, floor malting facilities require much higher square footage and are extremely labour intensive, neither are cheap. Floor malting gives the maltster an opportunity to feel, taste and test the grain, providing a true connection and thorough control throughout the germination stage of the malting process. Floor malted grain consistently produces highly flavourful and aromatic malts. We feel that floor malting produces a superior malt.
Will your malt perform as well as the malts we're used to? Yes, brewers have reported back to us with positive feedback such as high efficiencies, fast lautering and high attenuation.
Is your malt consistent? Our malt chemistry/performance is extremely consistent. We regularly monitor its performance with both in house testing and third party analysis.
Do you make 2-row malt? Yes, all of our malted barley is made with 2 row barley varieties.
Do you make specialty malts? We feel that all of our malts are specialty malts; however, currently we do not have the capacity to produce roasted or smoked malts.
